Objectives of the Observatory

5G & Beyond Observatory Research

As part of the annual edition of Research, the 5G & Connected Digital Industry Observatory of Politecnico di Milano aims to:

map the international evolution of Use Cases and identify the ones emerging in various regions of the world;
estimate the dimensions of the current 5G market in Italy, trend analyses, and growth drivers;
analyze a 5G project in detail, understanding related benefits, the challenges, and actual implementation in a specific context;
map the 5G ecosystem and possible evolutionary scenarios;
monitor new opportunities connected to technology evolution and the 5G Core Network;
identify 5G connectivity enabled devices and modules, examining their characteristics and associating them to specific applications;
analyze the integration potential of 5G industrial networks.

Activities

5G & Connected Digital Industry Observatory activities

The Edition of the 5G & Connected Digital Industry Observatory includes five closed-door Workshops dedicated to the Partner and Sponsor community, and the closing Conference. The planned meetings are as follows:

a kick-off workshopaimed at sharing the objectives and direction of Research activities;
two interactive workshops to:
- investigate 5G solutions in logistics and analyze synergies between the telecommunications and logistics supply chains, in collaboration with the Contract Logistics Observatory;
- analyze the 5G value proposition with an update on the international 5G cases census, the estimate of the current Italian 5G market, and the mapping of the 5G ecosystem and possible evolutionary scenarios (in connection with the RESTART project);
a traditional comparison workshop with industrial automation manufacturers in collaboration with ANIE and Confindustria, to discuss about the roles and opportunities of 5G in factory automation, the 5G-ready device survey, and the perceived challenges and limitations of the OT supply chain;
a hands-on workshop (IoT Lab), aimed at staying up to date on technology innovations, at comparing with other industry networks the most interesting use cases, and evaluating synergies with other networks;
a closing workshop to preview main Research results and organize Conference Round tables;
the closing conference, a public event to present 5G Research activity results with round tables and keynote addresses by the leading personalities of the telecommunications sector.

The 5G & Connected Digital Industry Observatory will develop the following contents:

a report containing the main results of Observatory Research;
a set of digital Reports on topics analyzed throughout the year of research;
a selection of videos, graphs, and online articles to follow up on topics covered in Research;
four webinars focused on examining more closely contents of primary importance developed within the course of research;
a periodic newsletter for supporters and companies within the community, that collects key news on 5G across the international and Italian scenario.
