Objectives of the Observatory

Now in its fourteenth edition, the Cloud Transformation Observatory is focused on developing and spreading knowledge to support companies in leveraging the opportunities of the Cloud, the acknowledged enabler of digital transformation. For the introduction of innovation within businesses and process digitization the Cloud stands out as the model for utilizing technologies enabling to cut costs and reduce time-to-market, making Information Technology ready to respond to business requirements and the rapid changes of the external environment. This makes leveraging the opportunities provided by emerging trends such as Machine Learning, Analytics, and IoT possible for companies, and also capable of managing the entire IT base in a more Agile way. The Observatory aims to analyze available technology tools and understand adoption courses, innovation opportunities, and the impact on the IT system and overall IT management as, for example, in managing Cloud costs and GreenIT impact. The goal is to become the point of cultural reference on this topic and foster the development of a community and the meeting of demand and offer of technologies.

Cloud Transformation Observatory Research

As part of Research the Cloud Transformation Observatory aims to:

quantify the Cloud market in Italy and identify main current trends;
analyze the role of the Cloud as enabler of the digital transformation and of main innovative technology trends such as Analytics, the Internet of Things, and Artificial Intelligence;
develop a model to manage Cloud costs within organizations;
analyze the Cloud’s role in the company’s ecological transformation;
analyze security measures to properly implement the Cloud in the organization:
understand Cloud adoption courses within companies and the impact of this paradigm on the IT system, focusing in particular on Cloud Migration strategies, and on Hybrid & Multi Cloud;
understand Hybrid & Multi Cloud Governance models;
Analyze the state of adoption of Cloud Native architecture across company applications, and the various application evolution strategies;
understand the transformation of work modes to Agile and DevOps and how these integrate into a secure application development framework;
understand the impact of the Cloud on the IT Department and what new skills are required;
analyze the state of adoption of the Cloud within Italian SMEs;
analyze the current status and evolution trends of the Cloud solution offering market, with particular attention to the impacts that new technologies, such as Artificial Intelligence, are having on the business model;
outline the evolution of the supply chain of Cloud solutions.

The Cloud Transformation Observatory Research is based upon an empirical analysis with the use of case studies and involving over 1000 demand-side companies every year, from CIOs of major Italian businesses to IT managers in SMEs and over 350 companies operating in the Cloud solution market.

Lastly, through targeted studies and a cycle of workshops, Research aims to test and consolidate frameworks and methodologies enabling to support companies in the delicate process of migrating information systems to the Cloud.

Cloud Transformation Observatory activities

The events planned by the Cloud Transformation Observatory are:

conduct an Executive Workshop with the Advisory Board and Research Partners with the aim of exploring and analyzing innovative research threads. The Advisory Board is a steering group of Observatory activities comprising C-levels and managers of large companies operating in Italy. The members of the Advisory Board are:

design three Research Workshops, in other words meetings between Advisory Board members, ICT supply chain players, and end-user cloud services companies to brainstorm and discuss key Cloud issues (Cloud cost management, GreenIT, Cloud Security), aiming to share and pool best practices;
a closing Conference to present Research findings with round tables and talks from the lead roles of Cloud services user companies. Each year the event is attended by over 700 participants;
organize two Use Case Presentation Sessions, open-door online events where Research supporting companies will be able to present a customer use case.

Activities planned as part of Research include:

develop a survey extended to large companies and SMBs operating in all product sectors in Italy;
develop a framework and methodologies to support companies in the roadmap towards the Cloud and Digital Transformation;
develop a Cloud and FinOps cost management framework and methodology;
analyze GreenIT activities implemented by businesses;
analyze the role of the Cloud in the implementation of circular economy actions;
analyze the Italian and European Cloud market;
conduct direct interviews with the main players of the Cloud market in Italy;
analyze available services, main trends, and the evolution of technology in the Cloud market;
draft a report with main Observatory research results.
