Objectives of the Observatory

Established in 2020 as a Workgroup, the Digital Identity & Wallet Observatory aims to understand the potential offered by Digital Identity systems and to contribute to the market’s development in Italy, while maintaining a European perspective.

Through analyses and empirical research, aimed at defining Digital Identity features and development opportunities, the Observatory is focused on establishing a qualified and independent point of reference to foster cross-industry discussion between market players.

Digital Identity & Wallet Observatory Research

As part of the Digital Identity Research, the Digital Identity & Wallet Observatory aims to:

understand the landscape of digital identity solutions at national and international level
monitor the state of dissemination and and development of the main identification systems in the Italian context among users;
monitor the development and regulatory progresses of the IT Wallet at the Italian level, and the EUDI Wallet at the European level;
understand how digital identity can help the country system and individual companies achieve sustainability goals;

closely examine the main innovation trends and their application in onboarding and digital recognition solutions, by exploring the opportunities presented by new technologies;
identifying and understanding megatrends impacting the market in the mid-term;

analyze the technology infrastructure of the wallet model, the adoption of this paradigm by Governments, private businesses, and users, and the impact on the ecosystem;

understand opportunities to enhance the creation of ecosystems and enrich the digital identity value proposition ;
evaluate in detail the main approaches and application of decentralized identity models;
monitor the level of end user and service provider maturity regarding the adoption and use of various identification and recognition systems;
understand how attributes and other trust and fiduciary services enhance digital identity profiles, ways of issuing and sharing, and the impact on the business model;
understand what synergies exist between digital payments and Digital Identity.
