Objectives of the Observatory

Founded in 2007, the Digital Healthcare Observatory aims to:

conduct analyses and research to help Healthcare sector decision-makers to develop innovation also based on digital technologies;
create culture, communicate and spread knowledge on innovation in Healthcare matters among Institutions, healthcare facilities, healthcare professionals, patients, etc.;
organize opportunities for Healthcare sector stakeholders in a pre-competitive context to discuss and compare experiences, promoting better collaboration among the various players.

Digital Healthcare Observatory Research

Now in its seventeenth edition, the Digital Healthcare Observatory is focused on the following Research objectives regarding Innovation in Healthcare:

provide an estimate of digital Healthcare spending, highlighting current trends;

analyze the degree of use and of interest in the various Digital Healthcare solutions of healthcare professionals and citizens/patients (e.g., Electronic Health Record, Artificial Intelligence, etc.);
further explore the level of development digital innovation for hospitals (e.g., Electronic Health Record, departmental systems, etc.);
identify the opportunities offered by the use of data and Artificial Intelligence in healthcare, analyzing related applications and legislation of reference;
identify opportunities for digital innovation to support stakeholders across the country (e.g., GPs, COTs, Community Homes, pharmacies, etc.) for the improvement of citizen/patient services;
monitor the progress of Telemedicine projects in the context of the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (NRRP) and analyze the level of maturity, deployment, and impact on sustainability
understand the evolving roles and competences of healthcare professionals of the future, in view of the digital transformation.

Activities

Activities planned for the annual edition of the Digital Healthcare Observatory are:

field research involving key people in Italian medical structures, such as regional stakeholders, Strategic Departments and CIOs of healthcare facilities, individuals, patients, general practitioners, medical specialists and nurses;
five restricted access Workshops – attended every year so far by some 300 people representing advocacy Associations, Observatory Partners and Supporters, regional ICT organizations and in-house companies, MDs, CIOs, and General Managers, Financial Managers, Healthcare and Social Healthcare Managers;
one public convention to present the findings of our research, with round table sessions and talks given by the main players from the healthcare sector, with in-depth analyses of real situations of innovation. Our “Award for Digital Innovation in Healthcare” is presented at this convention;
a Digital Health Talk involving Partner companies and a number of key representatives of the Observatory community.

Award for Digital Innovation in Healthcare

The Observatory’s “Award for Digital Innovation in Healthcare”, set up in collaboration with our sponsoring associations, was first presented in 2010 to create an opportunity to learn about outstanding projects and sharing their findings, in view of their ability to use modern technologies as a lever for innovation and improvement in the world of healthcare in Italy. Our purpose is to create a virtuous mechanism for sharing and rewarding best practice and excellence within Italian hospitals, as they often do not recognise the benefits of applying modern technology as a lever to improve their performance.
