The methodology used in this Report

Various methodologies were employed to explore digital innovation in the agrifood sector. To analyze the Agriculture 4.0 supply and market in Italy, technological solutions were mapped, followed by an online survey of technology providers to estimate the market value. A survey of 1,059 farms assessed the digitalization of Italian farms and the adoption of Agriculture 4.0 solutions, alongside the development of a “digital maturity model” to measure digitalization levels. A cost-benefit analysis framework, using over 80 KPIs, evaluated economic, environmental, and social impacts across 30 pilot cases in 20 countries. The study of Artificial Intelligence in the agrifood sector included a review of literature and ongoing projects, emphasizing the regulatory context. Mapping smart agrifood startups helped monitor emerging trends, while analyzing EU funding projects revealed the most supported innovation areas in agrifood supply chains.
