Startup smart agrifood: the international scenario in 2024
What you will learn
Startups are young entrepreneurial ventures marked by a strong focus on innovation which makes them attractive to investors and established companies alike. Since its first edition, the Smart AgriFood Observatory has analyzed startups offering digital technologies and services for the sector, aiming to track emerging innovation trends. For the 2024–2025 edition, the Observatory identified nearly 1,300 startups worldwide that provide digital solutions supporting processes across the agrifood sector. The analysis shows that the agrifood startup landscape is constantly evolving, with a growing number of innovative companies but a decline in available funding. This report explores the latest trends transforming the agrifood supply chain, offering an overview of the most well-funded startups, the technologies being adopted, the main application areas (such as Agriculture 4.0, FoodTech, and eCommerce), and the use cases driving emerg ing business models, such as strategic planning, operational management, efficient use of agricultural inputs, and the monitoring of equipment and infrastructure. The goal is to provide a clear picture of the opportunities and challenges shaping the sector.

The methodology used in this Report
The survey aimed to identify emerging services and business models shaping digital innovation in the agrifood sector at both national and international levels. To achieve this, researchers focused on startups that met specific criteria: they had to be international, currently active, founded in 2019 or later, have secured at least one funding round since 2021, and operate within the agrifood sector with a strong emphasis on digital and technological solutions.
