Software & Digital Native Innovation

The Software & Digital Native Innovation Observatory was founded in 2024 with the aim of highlighting the strategic value that the software supply chain has on the country’s core digital skills. The goal of the Observatory is to monitor the market to expand the ecosystem, disseminate innovation practices, and encourage innovation in business models, and to this end, it wants to provide opportunities for comparison and contamination between “digital native” companies and startups in an Open Innovation logic.

Objectives of the Observatory

As part of 2024 Research the Observatory aims to picture and understand the current status of the Digital Native and Software Companies’ world in Italy:

Analyze the market through an extensive survey of the Italian Software supply chain, from the point of view of demand and supply, monitoring the emergence of new “digital native” business models and providing useful data for the strategic direction of the industry players;
spread innovation practices and encourage business model innovation, creating opportunities for comparison and contamination between “digital native” companies and startups in an Open Innovation logic;
update the supply chain on digital innovation trends (e.g., AI & Analytics, Blockchain, Cloud, Cybersecurity…) and analyze their impact on software development and functional evolution;
facilitate ongoing communication on the topic with relevant authorities.

Observatory Research is based on an empirical analysis that through surveys and case studies involves various players, including Information System Managers, Digital and Innovation Managers, Line of Business Executives from organizations and Public Sector authorities operating in Italy, and solution provider company representatives.

2024 Research activities planned by the Observatory include:

Market analysis and quantification through extensive survey of the Italian software supply chain;
census of Italian companies and startups operating in the software and digital native sectors and study of their performance in terms of revenue and number of employees;
develop an index to measure software innovativeness and its impact on the various supply chains;
quantify the software market at the Italian level and monitor its evolution over the years as well as the impact of the main digital trends within it (e.g. AI, Blockchain, Cybersecurity…);
analyze software usage within SMEs and the main benefits experienced;
software usage analysis and market analysis for the PS (City councils) in synergy with the Digital Agenda Observatory.

Events

The events planned for the 2024 edition of the Observatory include:

3 workshops restricted to supply-side representatives, user companies, and institutional bodies intended to promote discussion and debate among players of the entire digital supply chain, digital native organizations, and relevant authorities;
a public conference to present Research results with panel discussions, presentations by institutions, and speeches by key players in the business world, and software provider representatives operating in Italy.

The Observatory will develop the following contents:

a printed Report containing the main Observatory Research findings distributed at the Conference;
two in-depth reports accessible only to Research supporters focused on detailed software adoption analyses within SMEs and the state of the Italian digital supply chain and its innovativeness component;
theme based databases with company and startup surveys accessible to Research Partners with detailed views on companies in the Italian digital supply chain, their market proposition and their innovation component;
case studies, creation of public case studies on software usage best practices to improve processes or for development of new digital native business models.
